PAIR OF DOULTON LAMBETH VASES
Designed by Elizabeth M. Small (active 1879-1884)
Doulton Lambeth 1884
This handsome pair of stoneware vases features Moorish-inspired stippled foliate decoration that complements their exotic Eastern profile. Done in muted blue, brown and green glazes, the gourd-shaped bud vases were created in 1884 by Duolton Lambeth artist Elizabeth M. Small (active 1879-1884), who won a bronze medal that year at the International Health Exhibition. As indicated by their markings, senior assistant Emily Welch (active 1879-c.1923), as well as the junior assistants Emily Moyes and Augusta M. Birnie (active 1882-1887), also worked on the pieces.
